This pair of 18th-century Georgian architectural staircase half balusters is constructed from solid pitch pine in a warm honey colour with a rich visible grain and aged patina. Each piece displays a sculptural hand-carved design comprising a flat rear profile, rectangular top and bottom mounting blocks, classical decorative turning, and a prominent central gadrooned knop above stepped mouldings. The timber shows natural surface wear consistent with age and previous use as architectural salvage. The pair measures 60 cm high, 14 cm wide, and 6 cm deep. In a contemporary interior, these decorative ornaments suit placement on a wall or as accents within an English country house scheme. They work well mounted as focal points in a living space, hallway, or study, and can also be adapted as lamp bases or incorporated into bespoke interior joinery.

Half balusters, also known as wall-mounted spindles, were designed to fix flat against the wall-side dado rail of a staircase, visualising symmetry with the full turned balusters on the open handrail side.

During the 18th century, balusters were crafted from dense timber such as slow-grown pitch pine, oak, or mahogany, allowing for precise lathe turning and decorative hand carving.

Authentic 18th-century examples display distinct characteristics including tight timber grain from old-growth trees, manual lathe tool markings, hand-carved relief details, and flat sawn rear profiles.

Architectural half balusters can be wall-mounted as sculptural art features, incorporated into custom joinery like console tables, or integrated into door surrounds and wall panelling designs.

Clean natural pitch pine by wiping down the timber with a dry microfibre cloth and periodically apply a clear natural beeswax polish to protect the grain and preserve its aged surface tone.
