Originating from the Shanxi region of China around 1890, this pair of architectural salvage doors is constructed from northern Chinese elm in a warm brown tone with vertical plank construction. The provincial style surfaces exhibit marks and sun bleaching commensurate with age, displaying a rustic farmhouse aesthetic. Substantial hand-beaten iron decoration includes horizontal strapping secured by evenly spaced metal studs, pin-type hinges, flat butt middle closing, and central ring handles mounted on a central locking plate. Standing at 186 cm high by 100 cm wide with a depth of 10 cm, these heavy reclaimed timbers offer substantial proportions for structural integration. In a modern interior, these antique elements provide an architectural statement when repurposed as a unique decorative wall panel or integrated directly into a bespoke interior renovation project. The weathered timber grain combines with industrial ironwork to create a tactile focal point suitable for traditional and contemporary spaces alike.

Crafted during the late Qing dynasty, Shanxi doors were traditionally built as durable exterior or courtyard entrances for residential compounds, reflecting the regional woodworking traditions of northern China.

These doors were typically constructed from resilient elm timber using joinery techniques without nails, reinforced with hand-forged iron straps and studs for added strength.

Authentic pieces show signs of historic weathering, natural shrinkage lines along the timber grain, hand-cut mortise slots, and genuine oxidisation on the original iron fittings.

Reclaimed doors can be mounted as decorative wall art, repurposed as sliding barn-style doors, or adapted into statement bed headboards to add tactile texture to contemporary spaces.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft dry cloth, apply clear natural beeswax periodically to nourish the grain, and maintain low indoor humidity levels to prevent rusting of the ironwork.
