Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This traditional Chinese jian sword and scabbard from 1890 comprises a dark brown wooden grip with carved fluting, a trefoil handguard, and a decorated shagreen scabbard fitted with silver-toned metal mounts and suspension loops. The visual details include curved guard quillons, patterned metal scrollwork bands along the scabbard, and textured leather panels. The piece measures 64 cm in length, 8 cm in width across the guards, and 3 cm in depth at the handle grip. Restoration is present on the handle and guards. Positioned horizontally on a bookshelf or within a gentleman's library display cabinet, the sword brings historical character to a study room. Collectors of traditional edged weapons place items of this type on dedicated stands or horizontal wall brackets to exhibit the decorative metalwork and textured scabbard surfaces.

FAQs

The Jian is a double-edged straight sword historically used in China for over two millennia, classically recognized as one of the four major weapons in Chinese martial tradition.

Traditional Jian blades were forged from high-carbon steel, with grips and scabbards constructed from hardwood wrapped in leather or ray skin and adorned with cast bronze, brass, or silver-toned alloy fittings.

Historical examples generally exhibit hand-forged blade geometry, hand-chased metal scabbard mounts with natural surface oxidisation, and signs of operational wear around the grip and suspension rings.

A Jian sword is typically presented horizontally on a dedicated timber display stand atop a bookshelf, console table, or mounted directly onto a wall as a decorative focal point.

Store the item in a low-humidity environment, clean metal components with a soft dry lint-free cloth, and periodically apply microcrystalline wax to prevent oxidation and metal corrosion.
