Late 18th/early 19thc English Red Stoneware Oval Medallion Depicting Poseidon Calling the Cretan Bull

19th century
Description

An English red stoneware oval medallion depicting Poseidon calling the Cretan Bull is a rare and highly collectible 18th- or 19th-century ceramic piece.

In English ceramic history, unglazed red stoneware was heavily pioneered by Staffordshire potters—most famously by Josiah Wedgwood, who refined this ancient-inspired body under the name Rosso Antico. Influenced by Neoclassical trends and excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum, factories like Wedgwood produced highly detailed, press-molded cameo medallions featuring mythological figures and Greek or Roman deities like Poseidon.

Other contemporary English potteries, such as those of Samuel Hollins or Thomas Barker, also specialized in finely sprigged and molded red stoneware.

Declaration

Lee Sherman Antiques has dated this piece to the 1800s.

  • Period19th century

This late eighteenth or early nineteenth century English red stoneware oval medallion depicts Poseidon calling the Cretan Bull in the Neoclassical style. The piece possesses a matte finish, an unglazed surface, and a warm reddish-brown colour with darker natural variation across the low-relief carvings. Visible details include a raised border edge, an incised depiction of a standing male figure holding a spear on the left, and a swimming horned bull facing him from the right. The stone medallion sits on a flat, plain background resting upon a plain neutral surface. Placed on a desk, a console table, or inside a display cabinet, this ceramic object serves as a decorative tabletop accessory or a cabinet piece in a home today.
