1900 - 1920
Description

A fine antique Mabie Todd “Swan” eyedropper fountain pen, distinguished by its elaborately worked gold-filled body, decorated throughout with a bold repoussé paisley pattern. The raised relief decoration is complemented by a blank cartouche to the barrel, providing a contrast to the surrounding ornament.

The cap is stamped “18 CT”, with the top of the barrel bearing the “Swan Pen 18CT” mark. The combination of the richly decorated body and traditional Swan branding makes this an appealing example of antique fountain pen design.

This Edwardian fountain pen is an antique Mabie Todd "Swan" eyedropper model in gold, manufactured from 18ct rolled gold and dark ebonite. The barrel and removable cap display an elaborately chased scrollwork engraving in a bold repoussé paisley pattern, with a blank cartouche on the barrel and an "18 CT" stamp on the cap. The visible nib extends from a dark ebonite section, accompanied by a very minor bump to the end of the barrel indicating age. Measuring 13.5 cm high and 1 cm wide, the piece rests comfortably on an office desk or library table. It suits daily writing tasks or serves as a decorative collectible in a study or gentleman's library setting.

Eyedropper fountain pens represent one of the earliest practical designs for self-inking writing instruments, gaining widespread popularity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Manufacturers such as Mabie Todd produced these pens with plain ebonite bodies or decorative metal overlays before internal filling mechanisms became standard.

Early fountain pens were primarily constructed from vulcanised hard rubber, known as ebonite, forming the barrel, section, and feed. High-end variations featured rolled gold, gold filled, or sterling silver outer overlays decorated with chased or engraved patterns, paired with solid gold nibs.

Authenticity can be determined by examining maker imprints on the barrel or cap, inspection of nib markings for purity hallmarks or maker logos, and verifying the absence of modern internal filling threads or cartridge fittings.

An antique gold fountain pen serves as a refined accents on an executive office desk, presented alongside leather desk blotters, brass trays, or open vintage journals within a study or library setting.

To preserve the materials, clean the pen using cold or lukewarm water only, avoiding harsh chemical solvents that can discolour ebonite. Store the pen dry when not in use, and gently polish metal overlays with a specialized microfibre cloth.
