  • MotifsPerched parrot figure, Circular metal hoop, Textured feather plumage, Turned wood perch

This Victorian decorative object is a Staffordshire pottery parrot figure perched on a turned wood bar, suspended within a circular metal hanging hoop. Dating from 1870 to 1880, the earthenware bird displays a green-glazed textured feather plumage with red accents, a dark brown beak, and detailed carving work. The metal hoop includes a small top loop attachment for suspension. The piece measures 57 cm for the bird and 80 cm from the hoop to the tail. Suitable for a narrow wall space in a sunlit conservatory, hallway, or living area, this item provides an alternative to traditional artwork or wall hangings. It hangs easily from a sturdy wall hook, bringing a touch of nineteenth-century ornamentation to domestic interiors without taking up floor or surface area.

Produced extensively in Staffordshire, England, during the nineteenth century, these earthenware figures were popular decorative items in Victorian homes, frequently depicting animals, birds, and contemporary figures.

These items were typically cast from lead-glazed press-moulded earthenware, hand-painted with ceramic enamels, and suspended from metal hoops using wooden or iron perches.

Authentic pieces generally display craquelure within the glaze, original steam release holes, unglazed base sections, and evidence of hand-applied painted enamels without modern mould seams.

These objects can be suspended near natural light sources, such as window alcoves, or incorporated into decorative gallery walls to add architectural texture and historical detail.

Dust gently using a soft, dry brush and avoid immersing the earthenware in water or applying chemical cleaners, which can damage original surface enamels or corrode metal mounts.
