Regency Inlaid Mahogany Adjustable Zograscope

18th century
Description

No:11257

A Regency Inlaid Mahogany adjustable Zograscope, the adjustable, hinged lens and mirror frame decorated with string inlay, raised on a turned upright, supported on a circular footed base with a ring of lead to the underside for stability.

Circa 1815                                                          Price :£ 1,000.

Height: (59cm), Width: (cm), Depth: (cm).

Zograscope:The zograscope, consisting of a lens and mirror on a wooden stand, was a device of the eighteenth-century for viewing perspective prints, sometimes known as vues d’optique. It was named the Zograscope for reasons lost to us, though it was also more variously and prosaically called a diagonal mirror, an optical pillar machine or an optical diagonal machine. The picture to be viewed was placed on a table and observed through a slanting mirror by means of a lens, large enough to see through with both eyes at once, whose curved edges distorted the image to give a surprisingly good sensation of depth. The surviving examples are elegant and highly collectible pieces of mahogany furniture, designed for the drawing rooms of well-to-do families who desired the latest in technology for their after-dinner entertainment, and who wanted, to quote a catalogue of 1784, to look at “remarkable Views of Shipping, eminent Cities, Towns, Royal Palaces, Noblemen and Gentleman’s Seats and Gardens in Great Britain, France and Holland, Views of Venice, Florence, Ancient and Modern Rome, and the most striking public Buildings in and about London”. These pictures were available at a price of a shilling plain or two shillings coloured, a substantial sum for the period.

This Regency scientific instrument takes the form of an adjustable mahogany zograscope from the eighteenth century. Rich warm brown timber with visible grain runs throughout the piece, complemented by contrasting pale geometric line inlay and string inlay in the rectangular frame, small round brass knobs on either side, and tiny dark finials atop the upright supports. The square frame holds a circular convex magnifying lens and an adjustable mirror below. Below this upper section stands a turned pedestal column resting on a stepped circular footed base. The object measures 59 cm in high. Placed upon a study desk, library table, or office surface, it functions as a decorative display item that recalls Georgian optical entertainment.

A zograscope is an eighteenth and nineteenth-century optical device designed to enhance the illusion of depth in flat prints and engravings. It uses a large convex lens and an inclined mirror to direct light and invert perspective, creating a stereoscopic three-dimensional visual effect for the viewer.

Regency era zograscopes were predominantly constructed from hardwoods such as mahogany, often featuring boxwood or ebony stringing and inlay. The functional components comprised turned wooden columns, adjustable brass fittings, a glass convex lens, and a silvered glass mirror.

Authentic Regency examples display hand-turned wood pediments, original brass friction fittings or screw mechanisms, and geometric boxwood line inlay along the frame. Signs of age include mercury-silvered mirror degradation, minor foxing on the glass, and hand-cut joinery on the structural framework.

A zograscope serves as a sculptural accent when placed on a mahogany executive desk, library bookcase, or console table. Grouping it with antique leather-bound books, brass globe instruments, or framed botanical prints enhances a cabinet of curiosities aesthetic.

Maintain the wooden components by dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and applying beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year. Keep the optical glass clean using dedicated lens cleaning solution, and store the instrument away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, or sudden temperature fluctuations.
