This 1920 antique coffee table follows an Arts & Crafts style, constructed from solid oak with a warm medium brown timber finish. The rectangular top has a chamfered edge and sits above a plain frieze, supported by four sturdy, gently tapering square legs with notched feet. These lower legs are joined by solid side stretchers and a low central stretcher, creating an architectural profile that highlights the exposed timber grain and ray flecks. Measuring 42.5 cm high, 71 cm wide and 43 cm deep, the table sits compactly in a room. Position this piece in a living room as a central coffee table positioned directly in front of a sofa or armchair, where it serves as a stable surface for everyday items. The sturdy timber construction suits both traditional interiors and English Country House aesthetics. Placing the table on a rug or hard flooring anchors the furniture grouping while providing practical access from surrounding seating.

FAQs

The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late 19th century as a reaction against industrial mass production, focusing on honest hand craftsmanship, traditional joinery, and natural wood grain. Pieces feature rectilinear forms, minimal ornamentation, and exposed construction details.

These tables were typically built using solid European or American oak, joined with traditional mortise-and-tenon joints, lap joints, and dowels. The timber was frequently finished with clear wax, oil, or stain to highlight the natural grain patterns.

Authentic pieces feature thick solid wood timber, visible joinery techniques, straight structural lines, and heavy pegged or stretcher-bound bases. The surfaces often retain historical wax patination and slight hand-worked timber variations rather than uniform modern coatings.

Anchor the table in a central seating area paired with neutral upholstery to balance the deep oak tones. Complement the timber with ceramic vessels, woven textiles, and contemporary art objects to integrate the historic wood into a modern space.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and dampness, using coasters or trivets to prevent moisture rings and heat marks.
