Set of Four Columns

1900 - 1920
Description

A set of four antique architectural columns, purchased in Provence, a few small pieces are damaged, nothing that detracts, lovely original paint, there are many historic small pins slightly protruding out at the back suggesting they was attached to something, I have not removed them as they can still be wall mounted with them there. A very decorative set of panels that would make a nice wall feature on their own or put behind a bed. The below measurement is per panel. Priced for the set of four.

This set of four Moorish Revival wall panels dates from 1910 and is made from wood with off-white, blue, and red paint. Each tall, narrow architectural panel has a repeated geometric star pattern, carved rosettes, an openwork lattice, and rectangular mouldings. They show historic small pins protruding from the back and a few small damaged pieces. Each individual panel measures 199 cm high, 29 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. These decorative panels make a striking wall feature on their own or can be positioned behind a bed as a statement headboard. They suit a Glastonbury Boho interior scheme and bring architectural interest to a living room, bedroom, or hallway wall.

Carved architectural panels, historically used as pilasters, door frames, or wall cladding, originated in various regional architectural traditions including Islamic, Moorish, and Indian design. They typically feature intricate geometric or floral patterns designed to add structural or decorative texture to interior and exterior spaces.

Traditional architectural pilasters and panels were primarily hand-carved from hardwoods such as teak, oak, or cedar, chosen for their durability. Many examples were subsequently finished with polychrome paint, whitewash, or natural gesso layers to highlight the intricate carved relief.

Authentic antique wooden panels display evidence of hand-carving through minor asymmetrical variations in the openwork design. Look for natural wear along the edges, original joinery marks, and layered paint or pigments showing age-related patination.

Carved architectural panels can be mounted vertically as a statement headboard or arranged together as decorative wall sculpture. They also serve effectively when flanked on either side of a large doorway or mirror to frame the central feature.

Dust the intricate lattice work regularly using a soft-bristled brush or vacuum cleaner attachment with a delicate brush head. Avoid water or liquid solvents on polychrome or whitewashed surfaces to prevent paint flaking, and maintain stable indoor humidity levels.
