This Victorian burr walnut oval loo table dates to circa 1860. The substantial oval top displays symmetrical bookmatched grain patterns in warm brown burr walnut with a moulded edge, and tilts vertically to show the figured surface above a carved pedestal base with four scrolled legs resting on brass castors. It stands 74 cm high, 150 cm wide, and 108 cm deep. In a modern interior, this piece functions as a centre table, occasional dining table, or statement piece in a hallway, reception room, or dining space. The table brings mid-19th-century English cabinetmaking character to domestic spaces, combining decorative timber work with practical versatility.

FAQs

Originating in the 18th and 19th centuries, a loo table was designed for playing the card game named Loo. These tables feature an oval or round top mounted on a central pedestal, equipped with a tilt-top mechanism so they can be stored against a wall when not in use.

Victorian cabinetmakers frequently used figured timbers such as burr walnut, mahogany, and rosewood, often featuring bookmatched veneers on the tabletop. Construction involved solid timber bases with hand-carved pedestal supports and brass castors.

Authentic 19th-century examples display natural timber grain variations, hand-carved details, and original brass tilt-snap mechanisms beneath the top. Inspection of the underside typically reveals hand-sawn timber elements, block mountings, and period-appropriate castors.

A Victorian loo table functions as a focal point in an entryway, a compact dining space, or a corner reading nook. Combining the figured walnut timber with clean-lined modern seating or contemporary lighting provides a balanced juxtaposition of textures.

Protect the walnut veneer by keeping the table away from direct heat sources and light to prevent drying or discolouration. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and periodic application of high-quality beeswax will maintain the timber finish.
