Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1850s:
Book-matched burr walnut veneers: high-grade cabinet making of the mid-19th century.
Carved cabriole legs with scroll feet: typical Rococo revival styling of the 1850s.
White ceramic castors under the feet: standard hardware for fine mid-Victorian tables.
Fine surface checking across the top: natural wood shrinkage over many decades.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian centre table dates from 1850 and is executed in warm brown burr walnut and solid walnut. The piece comprises a serpentine shaped burr walnut top with carved edge mouldings, supported by four carved scroll uprights above shaped cabriole legs terminating in scroll feet with original porcelain castors. An undertruss platform unites the legs, centred with a turned finial, and the frieze displays detailed carved scrollwork decoration. The dimensions are 72.5 cm high, 121 cm wide, and 70.5 cm deep. Suitable for use in a grand hallway or large reception room, this table functions effectively as a central display surface or a statement furniture piece. The rich timber grain and intricate woodcarving provide a classic English country house aesthetic, making it adaptable to traditional period interiors and period-inspired living spaces alike.

FAQs

Victorian centre tables emerged in 19th-century England as decorative focal points for drawing rooms and entrance halls, crafted to showcase highly figured wood veneers and elaborate hand carving.

These tables commonly utilized solid walnut or mahogany frames overlaid with burr walnut veneers, assembled using traditional joinery and finished with brass or ceramic castors.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved scrollwork, book-matched veneer pattern variations, period-appropriate ceramic or brass castors, and natural age-related patina on the underside framework.

Position the table in an entrance foyer, bay window, or behind a floating sofa, pairing its carved dark wood frame with contemporary lighting or neutral ceramic vessels.

Keep the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer lifting, dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying natural beeswax polish annually.
