This Georgian fireplace accessory is an 18th century blacksmith-made wrought iron chimney jack in an aged charcoal colour. The piece consists of a suspension ring at the top, a vertical saw blade shaped notched adjustment mechanism, a central horizontal bar, three hanging hooks with fleur-de-lis terminals, and decorative undulating ironwork above the bar. Measuring 130 cm high, 82 cm wide, and 18 cm deep at its maximum height, it shows handmade forging texture throughout its dark metal surface. Historically used hung over a fire with cauldrons suspended from the hooks, this item serves well today as a decorative focal point within a fireplace alcove, period inglenook, or rustic farmhouse interior. It hangs securely from a ceiling fixture or internal chimney bracket, providing authentic historic character and traditional craftsmanship to living spaces and historic properties.

A chimney jack or trammel hook was suspended inside a large open fireplace or hearth to hold cooking pots and kettles. The adjustable ratchet mechanism enabled cooks to alter the height of the vessel over the flames to regulate heat.

These items were individually hand-forged by local blacksmiths using wrought iron. The process involved hammering hot metal to form saw-tooth notches, suspension loops, decorative terminals, and sturdy hooks without modern welding techniques.

Authentic period pieces show hand-hammered surface irregularities, split rivets, and dark surface oxidisation or patina built up over centuries. Modern reproductions often exhibit uniform machine-cut edges and synthetic coatings.

An antique chimney jack can be displayed as architectural salvage within an inglenook fireplace, mounted on a feature wall, or repurposed in a kitchen to suspend copper pans and dried botanicals.

Dust the surface with a soft brush and apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax or beeswax using a soft cloth. Avoid water and harsh chemicals to prevent rust formation and maintain the natural dark patina.
