A seam rubber is a specialized hand tool used by sailmakers and mariners to flatten and crease heavy canvas seams during the construction and repair of ship sails. During the 18th and 19th centuries, sailors frequently carved these tools from available materials during long voyages, transforming practical equipment into personal artefacts.

Sailmakers seam rubbers were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods like lignum vitae, or marine organic materials including whalebone, walrus ivory, and baleen. Whalebone was especially favoured on whaling vessels due to its weight, durability, and smooth finish when polished.

Authentic 19th-century whalebone artefacts typically exhibit natural Haversian canals, fine growth lines, and an uneven surface texture under magnification. Age-related patination, subtle yellowing, and historic tool marks from manual carving or scribing also distinguish genuine antique pieces from modern reproductions.

Interior designers frequently display compact maritime collectables on custom acrylic mounts inside glazed cabinets, alongside leather-bound volumes on bookshelves, or atop console tables. Their sculptural forms and historical patina add textural interest and narrative depth to curated interiors.

Carved bone and whalebone require a stable environment with controlled humidity levels to prevent cracking or warping. They should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusted gently with a soft microfibre brush, and never exposed to liquid cleaners or chemical polishes.
