This Edwardian smoothing plane originates from 1910 and takes the form of a cast steel coffin-shaped body fitted with dark brown hardwood infill and a fully enclosed rear handle. The metal components display a silver tone alongside a brass lever cap secured by a threaded adjustment screw, while the upper iron bears the stamped inscription Norris London. Additional threaded brass hardware secures the interior components above the sole. Measuring approximately 20 cm in length, the tool is compact and dense. It functions well as a decorative desk accessory or a display piece in a gentleman's library or office, celebrating early twentieth-century mechanical design. The materials exhibit authentic surface patination and minor wear appropriate for an antique of this period.

An infill smoothing plane is a woodworking hand tool where a heavy steel or iron shell is filled with dense hardwood infills. This design provides added mass and stability, minimising vibration when smoothing timber grain.

Norris planes were typically constructed using heavy cast steel or annealed iron bodies, fitted with rosewood or mahogany infills and handles, alongside brass lever caps and steel cutting irons.

Authentic examples feature maker stamps on the brass lever cap and the cutting iron, usually marked Norris London or displaying specific patent markings on the adjuster mechanism.

Antique planes function as sculptural decorative objects on bookshelves, office desks, or mantelpieces, complementing industrial, rustic, or traditional interior styles.

Metal components should be kept dry and periodically treated with light machine oil or microcrystalline wax to prevent rust, while the hardwood infill requires light application of paste wax to retain its finish.
