This architectural miniature tabernacle dates from 1920 and is designed in the Byzantine Revival style. The piece takes the form of an open-arched canopy supported by four slender, turned columns that stand upon a stepped square base, topped by a rounded, hemispherical dome. It is constructed from gesso and timber finished with a bright gold-colored leaf, accented with dark painted zigzag borders along the arches and polychrome detailing in red and black upon the capitals. Visible signs of age include scattered surface wear and a missing top finial where the dome meets its peak. Measuring 80 cm high by 45 cm wide, the tabernacle sits comfortably upon a traditional sideboard top in a living room, hallway, or study. It functions well as a display stand for small decorative objects, a sculptural accent piece, or a focal point on a surface within a domestic interior scheme.

An architectural tabernacle or ciborium is a miniature canopy structure historically created to house sacred objects, statuary, or religious relics within ecclesiastical settings or private chapels.

These pieces were crafted from carved timber frameworks coated in layers of gesso, which were subsequently gilded using gold leaf and finished with hand-painted decorative detailing such as chevrons and polychrome accents.

Authentic examples display traditional water gilding techniques, showing subtle wear where red or grey bole primer bleeds through the gold surface, along with carved wood joinery rather than modern resin composites.

In contemporary settings, these architectural structures serve as dramatic focal points on sideboards or mantels, functioning as framing displays for small sculptures, candles, or treasured curiosities.

Maintain gilded surfaces by dusting gently with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster, avoiding water, chemical solvents, or liquid polishes which can dissolve the water-soluble gesso base.
