Description

A superb antique Victorian burr walnut writing table / desk. This was made in England , it dates from around the 1840-1860 period.

The quality is outstanding, this is as fine a writing table of the period as you could find. The burr walnut grain patterns are absolutely stunning, this stands on very bold fluted legs terminating in porcelain casters. There are tow drawers with fine, hand cut dovetailed joints and beautifully turned walnut handles. The back of the desk is nicely finished, so this can be used as a free standing item.

The condition is excellent for its age, we have just had this re-polished. The leather top has also been replaced with a hand coloured and tooled faded black leather.

Victorian writing tables are characterised by eclectic revivals of historical periods, often featuring substantial proportions, ornate turned legs, and rich timber veneers such as walnut and mahogany.

These pieces typically utilized a secondary softwood or hardwood carcass clad in high-status veneers like burr walnut, often featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer construction and inset tooled leather writing surfaces.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional joinery, timber shrinkage patterns, period-appropriate hardware, and natural patina accumulated over time.

Pairing a traditional timber desk with minimalist modern seating creates a striking contrast that highlights the rich grain of the wood while maintaining a balanced, functional workspace.

Maintain wood furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and apply occasional applications of quality beeswax to nourish the timber.
