FAQs

Pietra dura, meaning hard stone in Italian, is a decorative art form involving the inlaying of cut and fitted polished colored stones into a stone or wooden base, gaining immense popularity in Renaissance Florence and continuing through the nineteenth century.

These tables frequently combine exotic secondary woods such as satinwood, mahogany, or walnut with a top composed of hard stones like marble, lapis lazuli, malachite, and onyx, secured within a wooden frame.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut stone tesserae with minimal grout lines, natural aging and oxidisation of the timber, hand-cut dovetails or traditional joinery, and minor wear consistent with nineteenth-century use.

Placing an intricate historical piece within a minimalist or neutral modern setting allows the detailed stonework and timber grain to serve as a focal point without overwhelming the room.

Maintain the timber using appropriate microcrystalline wax and keep stone surfaces clean by dusting with a soft, dry cloth while avoiding acidic cleaners or excessive moisture.
