Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1870s:
Curule X-frame base and turned stretcher: popular continental design from the nineteenth century.
Shrinkage crack running across the top veneer: timber moving naturally over decades.
Brass cup castors on square feet: standard hardware for nineteenth-century occasional tables.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Biedermeier card table dates from 1870 and is constructed in honey-gold bird's-eye maple with a polished finish. The piece takes the form of a rectangular fold-over top above a single frieze drawer, supported by sweeping curved legs joined by a turned central stretcher and fitted with brass castors. Visible details include the distinctive figured grain of the veneer, a vertical contraction crack across the top, and a warm patinated surface. Measuring 78 cm high, 52 cm wide, and 38 cm deep, the table provides a compact surface suited to a narrow wall space or a reception room. In a modern interior, it functions well as a decorative side table or a console in a living room, hallway, or study, offering a practical surface for display while adding period character to the space.

FAQs

Originating in Central Europe during the early to mid-19th century, Biedermeier furniture focuses on clean lines, geometric forms, and the natural grain of light-coloured woods rather than excessive ornamentation.

Craftsmen frequently utilised native light hardwoods and fine veneers, such as birds eye maple, birch, cherry, and ash, combined with brass fittings and traditional joinery.

Genuine period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, authentic timber oxidisation beneath surfaces, hand-planed underside construction, and original folding or swivel hinge mechanisms.

Position the piece against a wall as a narrow console table or in an alcove, pairing its warm timber tones with contemporary artwork or structured ceramics.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or veneer lifting, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically along the grain.
