Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A biscuit barrel, also known as a cookie jar, is a covered container traditionally used for storing dry biscuits at the dining table. They gained immense popularity during the Victorian era in Britain, becoming a staple of middle-class parlour and dining room hospitality.

Victorian biscuit barrels were typically crafted from ceramic, earthenware, porcelain, or glass bodies. They were frequently fitted with electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) or sterling silver lids, rims, and swinging bail handles to add durability and formal elegance.

Authentic pieces usually feature manufacturer makers marks or registration numbers stamped or printed on the base, often associated with prominent potteries such as Doulton Burslem. Hand-painted or transfer-printed motifs, combined with heavy metal mounts and genuine age-related crazing in the glaze, also indicate authenticity.

An antique biscuit barrel functions well as a decorative accent piece on a sideboard, open shelving, or a coffee table. Its intricate patterns and metallic accents complement both traditional spaces and eclectic modern rooms by adding texture and historical character.

Clean ceramic surfaces gently using a soft, damp cloth without harsh chemical detergents to protect the glaze and transfer print. Metal mounts should be polished sparingly with a non-abrasive silver cloth, avoiding direct contact with the ceramic body.
