This Louis XVI style console table dates to 1880 and takes the form of a French demi lune piece measuring 81 cm high, 88 cm wide, and 41 cm deep. The construction employs warm brown satinwood finished with green paint, displaying a semicircular top surface. The table surface exhibits a central painted medallion showing cherubs, surrounded by hand-painted floral swags, scrolling acanthus leaves, and inlaid stringing. The structure rests upon fluted tapered legs finished in pale green with carved detailing. Placed beside a front door, this piece serves as a surface for small hallway items such as keys, letters, or a decorative bowl, while remaining compact enough for narrow passageways and entryways. The timber displays natural grain variation across the top, showing the warm tones of the wood beneath the varnish and painted accents.

FAQs

A demi-lune table is a half-moon shaped console or accent table that originated during the eighteenth century, designed specifically to sit flush against a wall in entryways, dining rooms, or corridors.

Craftsmen commonly utilised dense hardwoods such as satinwood, mahogany, or walnut, combining them with hand-painted polychrome decoration, thin veneers, and carved or fluted wooden legs.

Authentic period pieces display signs of natural wood shrinkage along veneer seams, hand-cut joinery underneath the frame, subtle crazing in the original paint, and hand-painted artistry rather than modern transfers.

Place the table against a wall in an entryway or alcove, layered with an oversized mirror overhead, a decorative ceramic piece, or a modern table lamp to create balanced visual interest.

Dust gently using a dry microfibre cloth and avoid using harsh chemical cleansers. Position the furniture away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber movement or paint flaking.
