FAQs

Georgian refectory tables evolved from utilitarian medieval monastery boards into refined household dining furniture during the 18th century, maintaining a characteristically long, narrow profile designed to accommodate large gatherings.

Authentic pieces are constructed from dense native timbers such as English oak, utilizing traditional joinery methods including pegged mortise and tenon joints, stretcher bases, and solid plank tops.

Authentication involves examining the timber for hand-planed surface irregularities, natural oxidation, peg construction, shrinkage cracks, and structural wear consistent with age rather than machine tooling.

Pairing the substantial timber weight with contemporary minimalist seating or industrial lighting creates a balanced juxtaposition that highlights the historical character of the piece.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, treating the timber periodically with natural beeswax, and using protective mats for hot or wet items.
