Description

A lovely antique Regency style mahogany extending dining table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1900-1920 period.

It has a beautiful mahogany top with two additional leaves, and two removable support stretchers. Each half sits on a pedestal base with four splayed legs and brass casters. The leaves transform this from a six seater into an eight seater or a ten seater table.

We have had this recently re-polished, there are some old marks and bumps that remain beneath the polish here and there. Overall this is in very good condition for its age.

The top halves can detach from the bases for ease of transport.

Regency furniture, spanning roughly from 1811 to 1820, is characterised by classical proportions, neoclassical motifs inspired by ancient Greece and Rome, and the prominent use of dark, rich timbers like mahogany.

These tables were typically crafted from solid mahogany or veneered onto secondary timbers, featuring hand-turned pedestals, brass castors, and mechanical leaf systems designed to expand the surface area.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, genuine patination on the timber, original brass hardware, and makers marks or stamps where applicable.

Pair the dark wood tones with minimalist seating, neutral walls, and contemporary lighting to create a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern aesthetics.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, and apply natural beeswax periodically to nourish the grain and protect the finish.
