The chaise longue, translating to long chair in French, gained immense popularity during the Victorian era as a symbol of domestic comfort and leisure, frequently utilised in drawing rooms and boudoirs.

Authentic period pieces typically feature a solid hardwood frame, most commonly mahogany or walnut, supported by coil springs, horsehair stuffing, and traditional textile upholstery such as velvet or damask.

Authentication involves examining the frame construction for traditional joinery, inspecting the secondary timbers, checking for hand-turned wooden legs often fitted with ceramic or brass castors, and assessing wear patterns consistent with age.

This piece works effectively as a statement furniture item when contrasted against neutral modern walls, paired with minimalist lighting, or placed strategically to create a dedicated reading corner.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment to remove dust, keeping the textile away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, and consulting a professional textile conservator for deep cleaning.
