Description

A beautiful and incredibly well made antique Edwardian inlaid rosewood desk / writing table. This was made in England, it dates from the 1900-1910 period.

It is of outstanding quality, the rosewood has absolutely gorgeous grain patterns and colour tones. This has wonderful inlaid satin wood, with stunning inlaid marquetry on the central drawer. There is an inset leather writing surface with tooled edges, this stands on tapered legs and brass casters. The drawers have high quality and intricately designed brass handles, with fine hand cut dovetailed joints and a letter divider in the right drawer. This is nicely finished on the back, so it can be used as a free standing item.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some minor wear here and there remaining beneath the polish here and there.

Edwardian furniture, produced during the reign of King Edward VII from 1901 to 1910, often lighter in scale than Victorian pieces, frequently drew inspiration from 18th-century Sheraton and Hepplewhite designs, incorporating delicate marquetry, satinwood banding, and refined proportions.

These tables were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, often featuring intricate floral marquetry, brass swing handles, leather writing surfaces, and hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction.

Authentic pieces usually display period-appropriate construction markers such as hand-cut dovetails, genuine timber shrinkage cracks, original brass hardware, and traditional French polish finishes rather than modern synthetic varnishes.

An antique desk can be grounded in a modern setting by pairing it with a minimalist contemporary chair, using it as a functional workspace in a living room, or placing it against a plain painted wall to highlight its historic craftsmanship.

Maintain antique wooden surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources, avoiding silicone-based polishes, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the historic finish.
