This Victorian games table dates from 1880 and takes the form of a fold-over card table in warm brown burr walnut, walnut, wood inlay, and brass. The top surface displays burr veneer with marquetry inlay details at the corners, edged with mouldings and fitted with brass hinges. Below the folding top, the structure rests on turned supports with a central stretcher, terminating in carved legs with scroll feet. The wood finish shows natural grain patterns across the timber. Measuring 69 cm high, 91 cm wide, and 45 cm deep, the table fits neatly against a narrow wall space in a gentleman's library or study. It serves as a decorative surface for a hallway or living room, expanding when needed for card games and entertainment.

Popularised during the 19th century, a fold-over card table features a hinged top that swivels and opens to double its surface area, traditionally used for playing card and parlour games.

These tables were typically crafted from fine hardwoods such as burr walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, often adorned with intricate marquetry inlays and lined internally with baize fabric.

Authentic Victorian pieces often exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, turned twin-column supports, central stretchers, brass hinges, and natural figure patterns in the veneer such as burr walnut.

Positioned against a wall when folded, a card table functions as a console or hall table, making it ideal for displaying table lamps, ceramics, or framed artwork.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax sparingly twice a year, keeping the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer warping.
