A Sutherland table is a narrow, drop-leaf table featuring folding flaps supported by pivoting gate legs, first introduced during the Victorian era around the mid-19th century to save space in compact Victorian parlours.

These tables are typically constructed using a solid timber frame, often mahogany or walnut, veneered with highly figured burr walnut on the drop leaves and top, and joined with traditional mortise and tenon joints.

Authentic pieces exhibit period characteristics such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional wood shrinkage, genuine burr walnut grain patterns with distinct figure matching, and period hardware like porcelain castors.

The compact footprint and rich wood tones make this piece ideal for use as a functional side table or accent piece alongside contemporary upholstery, adding historical texture and warmth to a room.

Maintain the finish by keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and clean periodically with a soft, dry cloth while occasionally applying a quality beeswax.
