Description

A superb antique William IV mahogany leather top writing table / desk. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1830-1840’s period.

This is of wonderful quality, it sits on beautifully turned solid mahogany legs terminating in brass casters. The two drawers also have beautifully turned mahogany handles and fine, hand cut dovetailed joints. The inset leather top is hand coloured and tooled round the edges. This has a nicely finished back so can be used as a free standing item.

We have had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some normal age related wear and patina here and there beneath the polish.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

William IV furniture, produced roughly between 1830 and 1837, bridges the gap between Regency elegance and Victorian weightiness, typically featuring robust proportions, scrolled details, and dense timbers like mahogany.

These pieces were constructed primarily from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary hardwoods, incorporating hand-dovetailed drawer construction, turned legs, and inset tooled leather surfaces.

Authenticity is indicated by traditional joinery such as hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage consistent with age, period-appropriate brass castors, and hand-tooled leather inserts rather than modern machine gluing.

Position the piece as a functional standalone desk in a study or as a console table in a living space, pairing it with minimalist seating to highlight its historical craftsmanship.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources, applying periodic beeswax polish, and protecting the leather surface from moisture and direct sunlight to prevent cracking.
