Tripod candlestands emerged in the 17th century and gained popularity during the Georgian era as portable candle tables used to illuminate rooms before the advent of electricity.

Cabinetmakers typically constructed these stands from native and imported timbers such as oak, mahogany, walnut, and fruitwood, often featuring turned central columns and pad feet.

Authentic pieces exhibit period joinery such as dovetails or peg construction, hand-turned tool marks on the underside, and natural patina resulting from centuries of oxidisation and wear.

Place the candlestand beside a sofa or armchair as a functional accent piece to hold a drink or small lamp, allowing its historic character to contrast with contemporary furnishings.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and treat it periodically with traditional beeswax to nourish the finish without sealing the historic surface.
