Giltwood console tables rose to prominence during the 17th and 18th centuries in France, particularly during the Louis XIV, XV, and XVI periods, where they were designed to be placed against walls in grand salons and hallways, often beneath matching mirrors.

These tables are traditionally constructed from carved timber, such as oak or pine, which is then gessoed, layered with gold leaf or metal leaf, and burnished. The tops typically feature inset slabs of natural marble, secured by the wooden frame.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved detailing with subtle asymmetries, historical tool marks in the wood, traditional joinery, and natural ageing of the gold leaf and gesso ground, whereas modern reproductions often display cast resin elements or uniform machine distressing.

In a modern interior, such a piece creates a striking focal point when paired with minimalist surroundings, contrasting clean, contemporary architecture with ornate historical craftsmanship, and topped with simple decorative objects rather than heavy clutter.

Giltwood requires delicate maintenance, avoiding moisture, harsh chemicals, and abrasive cloths that can damage the thin gold leaf layer. Dusting should be performed gently with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or microfiber cloth.
