Description

A beautiful and very well made antique William IV rosewood writing desk. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1830-1850 period.

It is of superb quality and is a great size. This has a smart and versatile design, meaning it could work well in a variety of interiors. The top has a two drawers that runs right across, it sits on two bold baluster legs that sit on platform bases with beautifully carved hairy paw feet. The back is also nicely finished, so this can be used as a free standing item.

We have recently had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some minor wear and small old marks beneath the polish here and there.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

William IV furniture, produced during the 1830s, acts as a transitional period bridging Regency and early Victorian styles, characterised by heavy, solid proportions, rich dark timbers, and classical Greco-Roman motifs.

These pieces typically feature dense tropical hardwoods like Brazilian rosewood or mahogany applied over sturdy secondary woods, joined using traditional mortise and tenon construction with hand-cut dovetails in the drawers.

Authenticity is indicated by timber oxidisation, hand-beveled drawer linings, original brass or wooden fixings, and traditional hand-rubbed wax finishes rather than modern chemical polishes.

Contrast the dark, dense grain and classical carved details of the timber against minimalist walls, neutral textiles, and contemporary lighting to create a balanced focal point.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources, dust regularly with a dry lint-free cloth, and periodically apply natural beeswax to nourish the timber without sealing it.
