A brush washer is a traditional scholars implement used in East Asian calligraphy and painting to clean ink brushes. Flambe glazes, characterised by streaks and variegated colours, were developed during the Qing dynasty by imperial kilns attempting to replicate earlier historic glaze effects.

These pieces are crafted from dense stoneware or porcelain and fired at high temperatures with copper-bearing glazes. The unpredictable chemical reactions in the kiln produced the distinctive streaked, mottled, and dripping colour variations characteristic of flambe wares.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit historical wear, appropriate weight, fine crazing within the glaze, and unglazed foot rims revealing the underlying stoneware body. Expert appraisal often involves examining the glaze flow, bubble structure under magnification, and baseline clay characteristics.

This object can be displayed as a standalone sculpture on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or glass cabinet, allowing its rich glaze and form to serve as a focal point. Pairing it with minimalist modern furniture highlights its historical texture and sculptural qualities.

Antique ceramics should be cleaned exclusively with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. Avoid using water, chemical cleaners, or abrasives, and display the item away from direct sunlight and temperature fluctuations to protect the glaze and body.
