Description

Large Chinese Export porcelain Punch Bowl. Qing Dynasty, Qianlong Period. 1736 - 1795.

Exquisitely painted in vibrant famille rose enamels. Exhibiting fine painted scenes, depicting busy mandarin family-life with officials, scholars, lakeside scenes, birds, pergolas, all set within cartouches. The attention to detail in the colourful clothing and formal costumes is superb. The visual storytelling portraying themes of education, wisdom, and hierarchy in Qing society, amidst virtues of every-day life.

The gilded rococo-style scrolling borders and diaper decoration framing the figural panels and edges of the bowl are finely executed. Rich gold accents, adding a luxurious touch typical of imperial-quality famille rose porcelain. The superior quality of enameling, delicate brushwork, and gilded detailing suggests this punch bowl was possibly produced in the prestigious Jingdezhen kilns for high-ranking officials or the export market catering to European aristocrats. This example demonstrating artistic refinement closer to Yongzheng-period famille rose pieces. Superb.

Chinese export porcelain refers to ceramic wares manufactured in China specifically for export to Western markets, particularly during the Ming and Qing dynasties, combining traditional Chinese craftsmanship with European-commissioned shapes and motifs.

These pieces are crafted from high-fired petuntse and kaolin clay, commonly known as hard-paste porcelain, and are typically decorated using hand-applied overglaze enamels such as the palette associated with famille rose.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit characteristic potting traits including footrim variations, iron-spotting in the glaze, microscopic wear consistent with age, and hand-painted brushwork that displays natural variations rather than mechanical precision.

Such decorative vessels can be displayed as statement centerpieces on large dining tables or consoles, introducing historical texture, rich colour palettes, and cultural depth into modern or eclectic room schemes.

Preservation requires gentle hand-washing in lukewarm water with mild soap when necessary, avoiding ultrasonic cleaners, harsh chemicals, or abrasive sponges, and ensuring stable environmental conditions away from direct sunlight.
