Description

A superb antique Victorian inlaid rosewood drop leaf side table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1860-1880 period.

It is of extremely fine quality, the rosewood has stunning grain patterns and absolutely beautiful inlays of satin wood. The drop leaf sides lift up and are held up by hinged supports to extend the surface area. There are two drawers with brass handles at the front, the back is also nicely finished so this can be used as a free standing item. The legs are beautifully turned and stand on brass casters.

We have had this re-polished to a very high standard, the condition is excellent for its age.

The wood is Santos rosewood, and does not need a CITES or article 10.

Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901, characterised by a revival of historical styles including Gothic, Elizabethan, and Rococo, alongside the later aesthetic movement.

Cabinet makers of this era predominantly utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and rosewood, frequently incorporating exotic veneers, brass hardware, and intricate marquetry or stringing.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional wood movement allowances, aged patina on the timber, original brass castors, and period-appropriate locking mechanisms or hinges.

This piece functions effectively as an occasional surface or bedside unit, where placing it alongside contemporary minimalist seating creates a balanced eclectic aesthetic that highlights the rich timber tones.

Maintain antique rosewood by keeping it out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, avoiding excessive humidity fluctuations, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the polished finish.
