Description

One of the best pieces of treen, I have bought in a long time...this is a finely turned 18thc "life preserver", turned from the finest fruitwood , with concentric ring turned pattern and a leather thong, that connects each piece....the preserver was mainly used by law enforcement officers, security guards, military personnel and gamekeepers on large estates, where they would come up against gangs of poachers at night and have to defend themselves....the preserver is in excellent condition with the finest colour that you get with "aged" fruitwood.

English. C1770-90.

A life preserver in this historical context refers to a small, portable blunt-instrument weapon or cudgel used for personal protection during the Georgian period.

They were typically crafted from dense native hardwoods such as fruitwood, boxwood, or lignum vitae, often featuring leather-wrapped or baleen-reinforced flexible shafts.

Authentication relies on examining tool marks consistent with pole-lathe turning, natural patina, wear patterns, and the appropriate ageing of internal wiring or whalebone cores.

It fits well within a study, library, or cabinet of curiosities display, mounted on a custom stand or placed alongside historic books and scientific instruments.

Keep the object away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity, applying occasional microcrystalline wax to nourish the dry wood without damaging the historic surface finish.
