French majolica features tin-glazed earthenware with brightly coloured lead glazes, gaining immense popularity during the 19th century through prominent manufacturers like Sarreguemines and Minton, known for realistic botanical and figural designs.

Makers utilised a porous earthenware body shaped via moulding or casting, which was then coated with an opaque white tin glaze before hand-painting with translucent metallic oxide colours and firing at high temperatures.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit maker marks or impressed numbers on the unglazed base, crazing in the clear glaze, vibrant hand-applied colour palettes, and intricate relief-moulded details characteristic of 19th-century production.

These pieces function effectively as wall art mounted on plate hangers, as centrepieces on dining tables, or displayed within glass-fronted cabinets to introduce vibrant colour and organic texture to contemporary spaces.

Preservation requires gentle hand washing with mild soap when necessary, avoiding dishwashers or harsh chemicals, and keeping pieces out of direct sunlight to protect the fragile glaze from fading and crazing progression.
