FAQs

Gateleg tables gained popularity in England during the 17th century, particularly in the Jacobean and Stuart periods, evolving as a versatile dining solution that could be folded down to save space when not in use.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid English oak, featuring turned baluster legs, stretchers for structural support, and hinged leaves supported by swinging gate legs.

Authentic early pieces feature hand-carved joinery such as pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-sawn timber with natural irregularities, heavy dark patina, and forged iron or wooden hinge pivots.

An antique gateleg table works well as a central dining feature or a console against a wall in a rustic farmhouse or eclectic interior, paired with contrasting contemporary seating to highlight its historic character.

Preserve antique oak by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and periodically treating the wood with natural beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
