Dutch Delft tiles were produced in the Netherlands from the late 16th century onwards, with maritime themes becoming particularly popular in the 17th and 18th centuries to celebrate Dutch seafaring trade and exploration.

Authentic period tiles are made from buff earthenware clay, tin-glazed to create a white or off-white surface, and hand-painted using cobalt blue, manganese purple, or iron black pigments before being kiln-fired.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining the biscuit ceramic body on the reverse, looking for characteristic corner motifs such as ox-heads or spiders heads, and checking for fine crazing and pigment absorption indicative of age.

These pieces work well as focal points on panelled walls, within traditional studies, or curated alongside modern minimalist artworks to create an eclectic gallery wall.

To preserve antique tiles, keep them out of direct sunlight, maintain stable indoor humidity levels, and clean only with a dry, soft microfibre cloth while avoiding chemical cleaning agents.
