This William IV period console table dates from the 18th century and is constructed from mahogany with a flame mahogany frieze, displaying a warm brown colour and a polished wood surface. The piece has a D-end fold-over top above a plain frieze, supported on four turned legs with small rounded feet. Delicate edge mouldings frame the curved top, while the turned elements exhibit ring detailing towards the upper section of each leg. The table measures 72.5 cm high, 89 cm wide, and 69 cm deep, opening to reveal a baize playing surface. Positioned in an entrance hall beside the front door, the console functions as a practical surface for everyday items or as a decorative console in its own right. The construction suits placement in a living room, hallway, or study against a wall where the folding top remains closed. The compact proportions allow the item to fit into smaller alcoves or narrow corridors while providing a traditional aesthetic suitable for period interiors.

FAQs

William IV furniture, dating from 1830 to 1837, bridges the transition between British Regency and early Victorian design. Characteristics include robust proportions, turned and carved leg details, and prominent use of flame mahogany veneers with rich finishes.

Tables from this era were primarily constructed using solid mahogany or oak for the core framing, covered in flame mahogany or rosewood veneers. Internal mechanisms utilized brass hinges and swivel pivots, while playing surfaces were frequently lined with baize cloth.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct joinery, such as hand-cut dovetails beneath the frieze and natural oxidisation on unpainted underside timber. Look for original brass hinges, authentic swivel mechanisms, and turned leg profiles consistent with 1830s production.

Fold-over card tables function effectively as entryway console tables placed flush against a hallway wall. Decorate the top surface with a table lamp, ceramic dish, or framed artwork, unfolding the leaf only when extra surface area or game space is required.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year along the wood grain. Keep the table positioned away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high-humidity areas to protect the wood finish and prevent veneer lifting.
