Description

A large and impressive antique French marble top console / centre table. This was made in France, we would date it from around the 1890-1910 period.

It is of superb quality, with stunning carving throughout. It is a great size and is carved on all sides, so can be used as a free standing item as a centre piece table, or it can be used against a wall as a console table. The gilt wood finish has a gorgeous patina, with just the right amount of wear. This has a gorgeous marble top that has amazing purple, white and grey tones.

This is in excellent condition for its age, with just some minor surface wear and some minor cracks to the carving, nothing that affects the structural integrity.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

French Rococo console tables originated in the early 18th century during the reign of Louis XV, characterised by asymmetric ornamentation, curved lines, and an emphasis on nature-inspired motifs designed to decorate grand Parisian salons.

Authentic period console tables are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak or pine, featuring hand-carved gesso and giltwood frames topped with thick slabs of polished natural marble.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the hand-carved joinery, the natural ageing and oxidisation of the gilt or gold leaf layers, and the hand-polished finish of the marble top rather than modern machine-cut profiling.

Pairing an ornate historical console with minimalist surrounding decor, abstract modern art, or simple ceramic accessories creates a balanced interior scheme that highlights the craftsmanship of the table.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently with a soft dry brush to avoid damaging the delicate metallic leaf, while marble tops require neutral pH cleaners and immediate wiping of acidic spills to prevent staining.
