Description

An early 19th century mahogany side table with a single full width drawer and square tapered legs. An elegantly simple and nicely proportioned table which would suit a variety of interior settings.

Condition: Overall this is in good condition. There are a few small repairs to the veneer on the edge of the top, and the brass handles are a little misshapen/worn. There are some old woodworm holes in the side of the table - this does not appear to be active but we have treated it as a precaution.

Mainland UK delivery (excluding the Scottish highlands) is included in the price - if you would like a quote for delivery elsewhere, or if you would like to collect the item yourself, please get in touch. Delivery of furniture usually takes between 7 and 21 days from order, though can sometimes take longer. If you need an item by a certain date please speak to us prior to ordering and we’ll try to help.

Georgian furniture spans the reigns of the first four Georges, characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and an evolution from heavy walnut to refined mahogany under master cabinetmakers like Chippendale and Sheraton.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised imported Honduras and Cuban mahogany for its rich grain and strength, frequently pairing it with secondary woods like oak or pine for drawer linings and internal frames, alongside brass hardware.

Authenticity is assessed by examining hand-cut dovetail joints, tool marks from hand planes, timber shrinkage patterns, oxidisation consistent with age, and original or period-correct brass fittings.

Pairing dark, polished mahogany with contemporary minimalist upholstery, abstract art, or neutral walls creates a balanced contrast that highlights the craftsmanship without overwhelming the space.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, and occasionally applying pure beeswax to nourish the finish.
