Description

A very good example of an early 19thc bone pipe tamper in the form of a ladies leg, complete with garter, stocking and shapely shoe....my feeling is that it is prisoner of war work, considering the area it came from and the quality....it is in very nice condition with a fine patination.

English. C1805 -15.

Pipe tampers date back centuries as essential accessories for tobacco smokers, used to pack down tobacco evenly inside the bowl to ensure a consistent burn.

Tampers from this period were commonly fashioned from bone, ivory, brass, wood, and turned antler, often crafted by hand or by sailors during long voyages.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit genuine age-related patination, natural grain variations, hand-carved tool marks, and historical wear consistent with pocket use.

Small objects like pipe tampers can be displayed in tabletop display cabinets, shadow boxes, or on a collectors desk alongside books and manuscripts.

Bone artefacts should be kept away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and excessive moisture to prevent warping, drying, and cracking.
