FAQs

Butler trays and stands became popular in 19th-century British households as portable serving furniture, designed to transport food and beverages from the kitchens to reception rooms before being folded away when not in use.

These items are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, featuring dovetailed joints on the tray rims and hinged, collapsible X-frame bases joined with wooden or brass fixings.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, hand-cut dovetail joints, patination consistent with age, and traditional timber shrinkage rather than modern mechanical fasteners or synthetic glues.

This versatile piece functions effectively as a mobile drinks station, a low bedside table, or an occasional surface in a living room, adding historic character and textural warmth to modern spaces.

Preserve the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and applying occasional traditional beeswax to nourish the wood and maintain the surface sheen.
