Description

A beautiful and rare antique Regency period mahogany writing desk. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1815-1830 period.

The quality is superb and this is a lovely, practical size. The top has an inset green leather writing surface with tooled edges, there are two drawers with high quality brass handles. This stands on a wonderful stretchered base with cross frame legs. The legs are nicely fluted, there are brass rosette accents at the joints. This also has a nicely finished back, so can be used as a free standing item.

We have had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. There is just some minor wear here and there remaining beneath the polish.

The Regency style, spanning the early 19th century in Britain, draws heavy inspiration from classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian designs, featuring clean lines, dark imported woods, and restrained neoclassical ornamentation.

Cabinet makers predominantly used solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, often incorporating brass hardware, turned stretcher supports, and hand-tooled leather writing surfaces inset into the top.

Authentication relies on examining hand-cut dovetailing in the drawer construction, old secondary timbers like oak or pine inside the framework, traditional patination on the wood, and hand-beaten or cast brass fittings.

An antique desk functions effectively as a focal point in a modern study or living space when paired with minimalist seating to create a balanced contrast between historical craft and clean-lined contemporary design.

Maintain antique wooden surfaces with microcrystalline wax and avoid direct sunlight to prevent timber fading. Leather inserts should be cleaned gently with specialized pH-neutral leather balms to avoid cracking.
