Early 19th Century Mahogany Davenport

19th century
Description

A 19th-century mahogany davenport writing desk, of compact proportions and attractive architectural form. The sloping writing surface is fitted with a green leather inset and retains its pierced brass gallery back. The body is well proportioned, framed by turned columns to the front and raised on small castors. The desk displays particularly attractive, well-figured mahogany throughout, with a rich, warm colour. The interior is fitted with a series of drawers, all neatly constructed and running smoothly. A working lock and key are present for both the top and side cupboard.

To the right-hand side is a cupboard fitted with drawers. Above the cupboard is a secret drawer, opened by removing one of the false interior drawer handles. The concealed drawer is hinged and sits alongside the frame of the davenport when opened. A well-made and practical example.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A davenport is a small, compact writing desk featuring a sloped top, originally named after Captain Davenport who commissioned the design in the late 18th century. It typically includes side drawers, a gilt-tooled leather writing surface, and decorative front supports.

Early 19th-century davenports were primarily constructed from solid woods and fine veneers such as mahogany, rosewood, and walnut. Writing surfaces were typically inset with gold-tooled leather, and fittings were made from cast brass.

Authentic period davenports exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original brass hardware, castors, and period-correct construction techniques. Early 19th-century examples often feature architectural turned columns, flame mahogany veneers, and brass gallery rails along the top shelf.

A davenport desk functions effectively in a hallway, home office, or reading nook as a compact workstation or decorative accent piece. Pairing the dark timber with contemporary lighting and neutral wall shades balances historical detail with modern aesthetics.

Maintain the mahogany finish by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax paste sparingly once or twice a year. Keep the desk away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent timber movement, veneer lifting, or leather drying.
