Original Antique Early Victorian Mahogany 4 Drawer Davenport Desk with Keys 1840

19th century
Description

Antique Victorian Mahogany Davenport Desk.

Exceptional Victorian Davenport With Barley Twist Supports

This exceptional early Victorian Mahogany davenport writing desk, circa 1840, is a beautiful example of mid-19th-century craftsmanship, combining high functionality with the elegant design elements of the period. Constructed from fine quality Mahogany, the desk features a striking writing slope fitted with an inset burgundy full grain leather writing surface, beautifully embellished with gold tooling. The piece retains its original, lightly faded French polished finish, which exhibits an abundance of genuine patina and character whilst maintaining a wonderfully even colour throughout. The slope opens to reveal a neatly configured interior lined with vibrant Birdseye Maple veneer which is a dummy to front its pull out pencil drawer on the side, providing a wonderful tonal contrast to the deep Mahogany exterior, complete with fitted pigeonholes for organisation.

The structural design is supported at the front by a pair of substantial, finely carved opposing barley twist columns resting on a shaped plinth base. The desk is exceptionally versatile, featuring a traditional bank of four descending hand-dovetailed drawers to one side, mirrored by four faux dummy drawers on the opposite side to maintain perfect visual symmetry. All turned Mahogany knobs are present and entirely unbroken. Adding to its rarity and charm, the upper right side contains a clever pull-out and fold-out pencil drawer. The top of the desk is finished with its original decorative brass gallery rail, and the entire piece stands upon its original brass castors, allowing it to be moved with ease.

Great care has been taken to preserve the integrity and security of the piece. The davenport retains its original working warded brass locks and keys for the side drawers. The lock to the front writing slope has been historically and professionally replaced with a high-quality, fully functioning Squire brand lever lock to ensure smooth security, and comes supplied with two keys, bringing the total to three keys for the desk. Crucially, the back of the davenport is fully finished and polished to the same high standard as the front, allowing it to stand proudly away from a wall as a freestanding centrepiece in a library, study, or drawing room.

Condition Report This antique davenport is in excellent, structurally sound condition, having been sympathetically prepared in our workshop. The Mahogany retains its original, lightly faded French polished finish, boasting a superb depth of patina, character, and an even colour across all surfaces, including the polished back. The burgundy full grain gold tooled leather writing surface is in lovely clean condition with only minor light wear consistent with age. Mechanically, all parts function perfectly; the hand-dovetailed side drawers run smoothly, and the unique fold-out pencil drawer operates exactly as intended. All turned knobs are present, secure, and free from damage. The original brass castors and decorative brass gallery are securely fitted. The internal Birdseye Maple veneer remains bright and clean. All locks are in full working order, with the warded side locks functioning exactly as they should and the replaced Squire lever slope lock operating seamlessly, with the piece complete with all three keys.

While historically a piece for correspondence, this desk is incredibly useful in a modern environment. Its compact proportions make it a perfect small desk for typing or using a laptop, with the added practical bonus of being able to store your device inside and lock it securely away when not in use.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Davenport desk is a compact writing desk featuring a sloped writing surface above a chest of side-facing drawers. Originally commissioned by a Captain Davenport in the late 18th century, the style became widely popular throughout the Victorian era for its space-saving design and storage.

Victorian Davenport desks were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, featuring hand-dovetailed drawer joints, leather-inset writing slopes, and decorative gallery rails made of brass or wood.

Authentic Early Victorian Davenport desks display hand-cut dovetail joinery, solid timber drawer linings, period brass locks or escutcheons, and distinctive carved or turned supports such as barley twist columns.

Because of its compact footprint, a Davenport desk serves effectively as an occasional workspace in a hallway, bedroom alcove, or living area, pairing well with traditional or eclectic decor.

To preserve mahogany furniture, keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement or leather desiccation. Dust regularly with a clean lint-free cloth and apply high-grade beeswax annually to protect the original finish.
