FAQs

French revival furniture, particularly pieces influenced by the Louis XV and XVI styles, gained immense popularity during the Victorian era. Craftsmen utilised luxurious timbers such as kingwood and incorporated gilded bronze mounts, known as ormolu, to replicate the opulence of royal French courts.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from a sturdy timber frame veneered with exotic woods like kingwood or tulipwood, often featuring intricate marquetry or parquetry. The brass or bronze ormolu mounts are individually cast, chased, and fire-gilded before being fitted to the contours of the furniture.

Authentication involves examining the quality of the bronze casting, the grain and patina of the wood veneer, and the hand-cut dovetails or traditional joinery. Genuine period pieces exhibit natural wear patterns, hand-chiselled detailing on the metalwork, and period-appropriate construction methods.

An antique centre table serves as a strong focal point in a contemporary room, bridging traditional craftsmanship with modern design. It can be paired with minimalist seating to highlight its decorative silhouette or used as a standalone display piece in a reception room.

Preservation requires maintaining stable room temperatures and avoiding direct sunlight to prevent the wood veneer from fading or drying out. Ormolu mounts should be gently dusted with a soft, dry cloth without using abrasive metal cleaners that can damage the gilt finish.
