Description

A Georgian oak tilt-top tripod table with a circular top made from a single piece of oak and a turned column base, c1760. The table has a rich deep colour and is in good condition throughout…

A simple little table, but the top is - to me - a thing of beauty. A single plank of oak with a subtle texture from being cut/planed with an adze - this is especially obvious on the underside where it hasn’t been smoothed off as much. The tilt top has a single mechanism with a wooden turn latch to hold it in place when the top is lowered.

Condition: Good condition throughout. There a couple of small scuffs on the top which I have tried to show in the photos. The base leans slightly to one side which means the table doesn’t sit perfectly flat, though this could be solved by putting a little wedge under one foot.

Mainland UK delivery (excluding the Scottish highlands) is included in the price - if you would like a quote for delivery elsewhere, or if you would like to collect the item yourself, please get in touch. Delivery of furniture usually takes between 7 and 21 days from order, though can sometimes take longer. If you need an item by a certain date please speak to us prior to ordering and we’ll try to help.

The George III period spans from 1760 to 1820, characterised by a blend of Palladian, neoclassical, and later Regency influences, often featuring craftsmanship in mahogany, oak, and walnut with refined proportions.

These tables were typically constructed from native hardwoods such as oak or mahogany, featuring turned pedestals, birdcage or tilt-top mechanisms, and tripod cabriole legs joined with traditional dovetail or tenon joints.

Authenticity is assessed through signs of age-related patination, hand-cut joinery, timber shrinkage, tool marks, and appropriate wear consistent with hand tools of the period rather than modern machinery.

An antique tripod table functions effectively as an occasional piece beside a sofa or in an unused corner, providing textural contrast and historic character within minimalist or modern schemes.

Preservation requires keeping wooden items away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, periodically applying natural beeswax, and avoiding silicone-based polishes.
