Description

Fine and rare 10th century Persian Nishapur buffware pottery bowl decorated in green, yellow and manganese, in the interior with stylized birds and animal and boteh shaped panels of foliage. The exterior with vertical lines to the rim. Damaged and repaired as usual. From a private Scottish collection of Islamic Pottery formed over 50 years ago. Many similar items can be seen in Metropolitan Museum of Art.

SIZE; 20.5cm diameter, 6.5cm high.

Situated on the great plateau of central Iran, Nishapur was for centuries an important political and cultural centre: a seat of governmental power in eastern Islam, a dwelling place for diverse ethnic and religious groups, a trading stop on commercial routes from Transoxiana and China, Iraq and Egypt. Nishapur's most significant period when the buffware was produced extended from the ninth century to 1221, when, after repeated earthquake disasters and military occupations, the city was devastated by the Mongols

Nishapur pottery originates from the major medieval metropolis of Nishapur in northeastern Iran, which was a thriving centre of ceramic production during the 9th and 10th centuries under the Abbasid and Samanid periods.

Buffware ceramics are typically crafted from a light buff-coloured earthenware clay body, often decorated with slip-painted motifs in pigments such as black, yellow, and green, finished with a transparent glaze.

Authentication involves examining the composition of the clay body, the presence of appropriate mineral pigments, typical slip-painting styles, natural wear patterns, and signs of age-related oxidisation or burial encrustations.

An ancient ceramic bowl can be displayed as a focal sculpture on a minimalist console or within a glass-fronted cabinet, allowing its historic form and pigments to stand out against neutral surroundings.

Ancient pottery should be kept in a stable environment away from direct sunlight and high humidity, handled with clean hands or gloves, and cleaned only with a dry, soft brush to avoid damaging the fragile surface.
