FAQs

Gateleg tables emerged in Britain during the seventeenth century, specifically gaining popularity during the Jacobean and Commonwealth periods as versatile space-saving furniture for smaller rooms.

These pieces were typically constructed from native English timbers such as oak or elm, utilising hand-turned legs, mortise and tenon joints, and pivoting gate supports for the drop leaves.

Authenticity is indicated by period joinery methods like trunnels or wooden pegs, hand-planed board surfaces, natural oxidisation, and tool marks consistent with seventeenth-century hand tools.

Pair the table with minimalist seating to create a striking contrast, or use it as a compact side console in a hallway to add historical warmth and texture to modern spaces.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically nourish the wood with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
