Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Oak has been utilised in British furniture making for centuries due to its durability and strength. While low tables specifically designed as coffee tables became widespread in the 20th century, many are crafted from earlier timber or inspired by traditional jointed furniture styles.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from solid quarter-sawn or plain-sawn oak, often featuring traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, hand-turned legs, and peg fastenings rather than modern metal brackets.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, tool marks, and construction methods. Genuine older pieces display natural patination, shrinkage cracks, hand-cut joints, and consistent wear patterns appropriate to their age.

Pairing a heavy wooden table with contemporary upholstery creates a balanced aesthetic. Styling with minimal objects, such as ceramic bowls or stacked art books, highlights the natural grain and texture of the wood.

Maintain solid oak by avoiding direct sunlight and excessive heat sources which can cause splitting. Clean with a dry or slightly damp lint-free cloth and periodically nourish the wood with traditional bees-wax to preserve the finish.
